The Ultimate Packing Guide for Long-Term Travel

After years of overpacking and lugging heavy suitcases through cobblestone streets, I've finally cracked the code on traveling light. Whether you're heading out for a two-week holiday or a two-month adventure, the principles remain the same.
Start with the 1-2-3-4-5 rule: 1 hat, 2 pairs of shoes, 3 bottoms, 4 tops, and 5 pairs of underwear and socks. This simple framework covers virtually any trip length — just add laundry days. Merino wool is your best friend here; it's naturally odor-resistant, temperature-regulating, and packs down to almost nothing.
Rolling your clothes instead of folding them isn't just a space-saving trick — it also reduces wrinkles. Packing cubes take this a step further by compressing everything and keeping your bag organized. I use a small cube for tops, a medium for bottoms, and a slim one for underwear.
Toiletries are where most people go wrong. Ditch the full-size bottles and invest in reusable silicone tubes. Most accommodations provide shampoo and soap anyway. A solid shampoo bar lasts months and takes up zero liquid allowance.
Tech-wise, a single multi-port USB-C charger has replaced three separate chargers in my kit. A lightweight power bank, noise-canceling earbuds, and your phone camera are really all you need — unless photography is your main pursuit.
The golden rule? Lay out everything you think you need, then remove a third of it. You'll never regret packing less, but you'll always regret packing more.
